Organizations

James River Writers

James River Writers builds community by connecting and inspiring writers and readers in central Virginia.

James River Writers is an amazing group of people.* This organization has helped me more than any other resource. They offer panels on writing craft and industry, master classes, critique group connections, hands-on workshops, moral support, and an annual conference.** When I came to Richmond, I felt undeserving of the title “writer.” JRW has given me the confidence to declare it and the resources to make it possible. Plus, they’re fun. Come join us.

*And I don’t say that just because I serve on the board of directors.

** I chaired the James River Writers Conference in 2012 and 2013.

Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators

SCBWI is the only professional organization specifically for those individuals writing and illustrating for children and young adults in the fields of children’s literature, magazines, film, television, and multimedia.

I’m an associate member of SCBWI. If you write for kids and teens, check them out. A list of member benefits can be found on their site.

IndieBound

IndieBound is a community-oriented movement begun by the independent bookseller members of the American Booksellers Association. It brings together booksellers, readers, indie retailers, local business alliances, and anyone else with a passionate belief that healthy local economies help communities thrive.

If you don’t already frequent an independent bookstore, you can find your local store through IndieBound. They’ll likely have knowledgable staff, author events, and loads of book suggestions.
